The 4500 sf house, sited along the banks of the Bigwood River at the base of the valley, was designed as both a permanent residence for one and a vacation house for an extended family. In order to achieve a comfortable level of privacy while full and an intimate home when alone, the house is organized along two overlapping axes, each with its own stair. The axis perpendicular to the river, used primarily by the owner, provides views of the river and immediate connections to the outside. The second, longer axis runs parallel to the river giving smaller oblique views and is used primarily by guests.
Exterior stonework and stucco, materials typical to the local building tradition, were used with modern detailing. Long stone walls wrap the house and extend into the landscape, providing a physical connection between the inside and out. The stucco is detailed as a series of panels creating a geometric pattern in contrast to the natural surroundings.
