This 4000 sf space includes a commercial gallery and a collection of rare 19th Century photographs. The public gallery spaces used to exhibit both contemporary and 19th century photographs, are organized around the introverted space of the Archival Library. Large sliding panels in front of the two window walls and mechanical and storage spaces maximize wall space while providing the flexibility to transform a contemporary open plan gallery to a closed, intimate space suitable for viewing vintage works.
Honeycomb cores were used to minimize the weight of the sliding panels, which also had to function as gallery walls. Using a gravity system, the panels go up to a length of 18 feet.
Archival requirements for storage and preservation of vintage photographs included the use of special mechanical systems for temperature and humidity control, and steel storage units behind the mahogany panels in the library.
