Nandinee Phookan started the firm in 1996. She has a Master's degree in Housing and Environmental Design from MIT and a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Delhi in India.

Nandinee worked at several architectural firms including Charles Correa Associates in Bombay and Bond Ryder/ Davis Brody Bond in New York before starting her firm. She also taught Architectural Design studios as an Adjunct Professor at Pratt Institute and the City College of the City University of New York.

At MIT, Nandinee worked with N. John Habraken on the application of his system of "Supports and Infill" to create flexible, adaptable spaces in the context of multi-family housing. She was the recipient of an Aga Khan Travel Grant which led to the photo documentation of the urban fabric in Ajmer, India. She also did a series of drawings on the vernacular architecture of Kulu Valley in India under the sponsorship of E. Alkazi.

Nandinee's broad interest in the application of design thinking is reflected in the firm's portfolio of projects ranging from graphics and branding, textiles, furniture and exhibition design to architecture and urban design.

Luis F. Rivera joined Nandinee Phookan Architects in 2002. He has a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the City College of the City University of New York.

Luis has worked with some of the largest architectural firms in the US including Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Ellerbe Beckett, NBBJ and Swanke Hayden Connell on projects ranging from healthcare and institutional to assisted living and community centers.

Luis brings to NPA his experience in project management and technical coordination. His interest in leadership and teamwork has shaped the organization to create a more efficient and empowering environment where every member plays a valuable role.
